"How much will it cost?" is the first question almost every business owner asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you're building. Two projects that both sound like "an app" can differ in cost by ten times or more. Here's what actually drives the price, so you can plan a realistic budget.

1. What type of product you need

  • Business website: a few pages that explain your services and bring in enquiries. Usually the most affordable option.
  • Website with features: bookings, online payments, a blog or a client login. Priced higher because of the extra logic.
  • Web app or custom software: dashboards, portals, CRMs or marketplaces built around your workflow.
  • Mobile app: iOS and Android apps, often with a backend and an admin panel behind them.

2. The number and complexity of features

Every feature adds design, development and testing time. User accounts, payments, notifications, chat, video calls, admin panels and third-party integrations each add to the scope. The fastest way to control cost is to launch with the features that matter most, then add more once real users are on board.

3. Design quality

A ready-made template costs less upfront but can look generic and be harder to change later. A custom design costs more but fits your brand and your customers, which often pays for itself in trust and conversions.

4. Technology and scalability

Modern frameworks and cloud hosting make products faster, more secure and cheaper to run over time. Cutting corners on the foundation often means paying again later to rebuild.

5. What happens after launch

Hosting, domains, security updates, bug fixes and new features are ongoing costs. Ask upfront what's included after launch and what a monthly care plan would cost.

💡Watch out for quotes that look very cheap. Check who owns the code and accounts, whether hosting and support are included, and whether the price is fixed or can grow later.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Is the quote fixed, and exactly what does it include?
  • Will I own the code, designs, domain and hosting accounts?
  • How will I see progress during the project?
  • What does support cost after launch?
  • Can you show similar work you've built?
